The Manly rugby league community is mourning the passing of Ian Martin (#197), one of the club’s most respected and celebrated sons. Manly Warringah Rugby League Football Club has confirmed the sad news, remembering Martin for his outstanding contribution to the Sea Eagles and the many memories he created throughout his distinguished playing career.
A local junior from Narraweena, Ian Martin represented Manly from 1969 to 1978, playing primarily as a five-eighth or lock. Across his career, he recorded 191 graded games, including an impressive 159 first-grade appearances.
Martin’s years with Manly were marked by remarkable consistency, commitment and success. He featured in six Grand Finals for the club, with that total including the famous 1978 Grand Final draw and subsequent replay. His contribution during one of the most important eras in Manly’s history helped establish his place among the club’s enduring greats.
Beyond the statistics and achievements, Martin was remembered for the personality and character he brought to those around him. Affectionately known as “IMA,” a nickname he humorously explained as meaning “I’m a Martian,” he became a much-loved figure among teammates, supporters and members of the wider Manly rugby league family.
His service to the club was formally recognised in 2014, when he was made a Manly Life Member, No. 57. The honour reflected not only his achievements on the field but also the lasting connection he maintained with the organisation and its community.
News of his passing has brought deep sadness to former teammates, supporters and everyone who admired his contribution to Manly. For many, Martin represented more than a talented rugby league player. He was one of Manly’s own—a local junior who rose through the ranks and went on to leave an enduring mark on the club he represented with distinction.
The memories of his playing days, his Grand Final appearances, his personality and his dedication to Manly will remain part of the club’s history. Generations of supporters will continue to remember the impact he made during his years wearing the Sea Eagles jersey.
