The Essendon Doutta Stars Football Club and the wider Victorian sporting community are mourning the heartbreaking passing of Dean “Deano” Roumeliotis, a much-loved young athlete remembered forever as #44.
Dean’s journey with Doutta Stars began in 2015 as an Under 8 player. From the beginning, his competitive spirit was unmistakable. He regularly challenged himself against older players, including doubling up in the Under 10s, demonstrating the determination and toughness that would become defining qualities throughout his football journey.
He progressed through the club’s junior program before reaching the Under 18s in 2024. At just 16, Dean stepped up to make his senior Reserves debut and also played as the starting ruckman in the club’s Under 18 Grand Final side.
In 2025, Dean continued to establish himself in the Premier Division, becoming a formidable presence in the ruck. Across 13 games, he was named among the team’s best on four occasions. Although an injury prevented him from participating in the finals, his contribution helped his team reach a Premier Division Grand Final.
Dean continued challenging himself in 2026, again stepping up to play Reserves football alongside his Under 18 commitments. His desire to compete, improve, and test himself against older and stronger opponents reflected the character that made him so admired.
Tributes from the club remember Dean’s cheeky smile, toughness, competitiveness, loyalty, and kindness. Beneath his determined sporting personality was a warm and caring young man who loved his teammates, friends, family, and football club.
Dean’s legacy will forever remain part of the Essendon Doutta Stars community. His #44 jumper will represent not only his achievements on the field but also the friendships, laughter, and memories he left behind.
A service celebrating Dean’s life will be held on Tuesday, September 1, at 10:00 a.m. at St Dimitrios Greek Orthodox Church in Moonee Ponds.
The Roumeliotis family has asked that, instead of gifts, those wishing to contribute consider supporting the Epilepsy Foundation in Dean’s memory.
